PRESS RELEASE

A Decade of Progress: 121 Exchanges and CCPs around the world “Ring the Bell for Gender Equality” on its 10th Anniversary

London, 11 March 2024 – The World Federation of Exchanges (The WFE) proudly announces the 10th annual "Ring the Bell for Gender Equality" event, a global initiative that invites exchanges worldwide to ring the bell to signify their commitment to fostering gender equality in the workplace, marketplace, and community. There will be 121 exchanges in total involved in events, holding workshops and bellringings in honour of their fantastic female colleagues this month.

To mark International Women’s Day on 8th March the WFE published its Women Leaders Special Edition Focus Magazine in which we highlighted some of the brilliant women within our membership organisations. At the WFE, we are proud that many member exchanges have long been proactive in promoting gender equality, as demonstrated by their own projects and their active participation in the annual Ring the Bell for Gender Equality initiative.

The Ring the Bell events, both in-person and virtual, started on 4 March and will continue throughout the month.

Nandini Sukumar, CEO of the WFE said: "As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of 'Ring the Bell for Gender Equality', we reflect on a decade of progress and collective efforts to advance gender equality globally. Exchanges and CCPs, as facilitators of financial markets, have a significant role in promoting inclusivity and empowering women. By ringing the bell, we not only celebrate achievements but also reaffirm our commitment to building a more equitable future."

Partnered with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, UN Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) Initiative, UN Global Compact, UN Women, this year's Ring the Bell campaign aligns with UN Women's theme for International Women's Day 2024, "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress." In its tenth year, the initiative highlights a decade of progress in fostering gender equality and women's empowerment.

The list of participating exchanges is below and more information on their individual events can be found here.

About the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE)

Established in 1961, the WFE is the global industry association for exchanges and clearing houses. Headquartered in London, it represents over 250 market infrastructure providers, including standalone CCPs that are not part of exchange groups. Of our members, 37% are in Asia-Pacific, 43% in EMEA and 20% in the Americas. WFE’s 57 member CCPs collectively ensure that risk takers post some $1 trillion (equivalent) of resources to back their positions, in the form of initial margin and default fund requirements. WFE exchanges are home to 59,400 listed companies, and the market capitalization of these entities is over $122.94 trillion; around $162.04 trillion (EOB) in trading annually passes through WFE members (at end 2021).

The WFE is the definitive source for exchange-traded statistics and publishes over 350 market data indicators. Its free statistics database stretches back more than 40 years and provides information and insight into developments on global exchanges. The WFE works with standard-setters, policy makers, regulators, and government organisations around the world to support and promote the development of fair, transparent, stable and efficient markets. The WFE shares regulatory authorities’ goals of ensuring the safety and soundness of the global financial system.

With extensive experience of developing and enforcing high standards of conduct, the WFE and its members support an orderly, secure, fair and transparent environment for investors; for companies that raise capital; and for all who deal with financial risk. We seek outcomes that maximise the common good, consumer confidence and economic growth. And we engage with policy makers and regulators in an open, collaborative way, reflecting the central, public role that exchanges and CCPs play in a globally integrated financial system.
