Dear Colleagues

Welcome to the March 2017 issue of Focus.

We are busy as we prepare for the 34th IOMA WFE Clearing & Derivatives Conference (19-21 April, Frankfurt), and look forward to welcoming you there. You can read the full programme here, and registration is still open, so please click here to sign up. The two-day agenda promises a rich and vibrant range of themes and issues for debate by WFE members and affiliates, key industry stakeholders, and the press.

Our CEO Interview this month is with Edemir Pinto, CEO of B3. He tells us about the creation of B3 - the combination of BM&FBOVESPA and CETIP - before he hands the reins to incoming CEO Gilson Finkelsztain in May 2017.

From our member, the DTCC, a collection of views of four industry leaders on the topic of blockchain regulation. We are delighted to feature them in this issue:

• Mark Wetjen, Managing Director and Head of Global Public Policy, DTCC
• Andrew Douglas, Managing Director, Government Relations, DTCC & CEO, DTCC’s European Trade Repository
• Blythe Masters, CEO, Digital Asset Holdings
• Emmanuel Aidoo, Head of Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Strategy, Credit Suisse

We have an overview of the challenges and opportunities in the UAE’s SME market from Ali Al Hashimi, Executive Vice President - Head of Financial Services Division, Dubai Financial Market (DFM). And we learn from our Education Partner - Cambridge Judge Business School – about how important it is to build project capability before jumping into managing a new project. Don’t forget you can enjoy a 15% discount on Executive Education course fees too.

This month, our WFE Research topic looks at investment flows through exchanges in the first two months of 2017. We are also pleased to feature one of the WFE Research team members - Dr Stefano Alderighi, Senior Economist - who gave two key-note talks at prestigious academic departments at leading UK universities in March, helping to encourage the next generation of potential investors.

We will be sending details about the second WFE Working Committee (5 June, London) to all members and affiliates in April, so please look out for that.

Finally, we are counting down to our bi-annual WFE Technology Conference, taking place here in London, 24-26 July, with our partner Imperial College London. You can read about the event here, but it is shaping up to be a truly unmissable conference for Chief Technology Officers, Chief Information Security Officers, Chief Innovation Officers, Chief Digital Officers and Heads of Strategy at WFE members globally. As the lines between finance and industry converge, this event seeks to capture and discuss the latest technological innovations in the market structure space.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement, and do keep the feedback coming at [email protected]
